I’m writing this to hopefully clear up and explain some controversy, and conceivably convince you to contribute your help to the Humane Society of the United States. I feel the need to address this issue because this organization was created to help animals nationally, and it has been a very successful organization. It would be a shame for it to fall due to such a big misunderstanding and lack of knowledge of what they actually do.
As you know, The Humane Society of the United States runs off of donations and many people are subscribed to monthly funding. It doesn’t surprise me that they are a little worried about where exactly their money is going. Recently many people have claimed that the HSUS hasn’t been truthful about where they say they’re spending the money at. I find it hard to believe that such a large, caring, and successful organization could be so untruthful.
As the Humane Watch puts it, “the HSUS isn’t affiliated with any community based humane societies or other pet shelters.” Many people get under the impression that the Humane Society of the United States opens and funds local animal shelters with your donations. But they never claimed to do so. The Humane Society of the United States does NOT donate to local animal shelters.
I know that these harsh criticisms are off-put and untrue. These skeptical criticizers haven’t looked into what the HSUS actually does to help improve the lives of animals. The people making these false statements look around their community and see animal cruelty still happening. As much as all animal lovers hate to see that, that’s a fight that will be going on for a very long time. It’s the fight that you don’t see that the HSUS is battling with our donations.
The Humane Society of the United States fights on the legal side of ending animal cruelty. They fight to pass laws; which can be just as equally important, if not more important, than fighting first hand. Without these laws passed, no one could force big companies and facilities like McDonald’s, ThorSport, and Virginia’s Natural Bridge Zoo to change their policies to improve and save the lives of the animals living there.

I know this may not be what you had in mind when you were donating your money, or thinking about donating your money, but think about all the good they’ve done with it. They’ve saved MILLIONS of lives with the laws they’ve passed. That’s more than I even imagined helping when I first started donating. | You can see that they’ve helped passed many laws in the federal and state legislation on The Humane Society of the United States website. As they have written at the top of the page, "The HSUS works to advance public policies—including at the state and federal levels—to protect animals from cruelty and abuse." If you scroll down it shows you recent stories, whether they be small or big. In their eyes, every one counts because this is what your money is going to, this is what is going to help the animals, and this is how they are going to make an impact the most. |
One of the things the HSUS is working on now is ending cosmetic testing on animals. This is a big issue because many people don’t realize that behind all of your beautiful long lashes and baby soft skin, there’s a tortured animal. These animals go through tremendous amounts of pain so that researchers will know how it will affect the human body. The HSUS is fighting to pass laws to end this violence, and without these laws being passed, there’s no way we could get them to stop.
I hope that this has helped explain the controversy and confusion, but more importantly I hope you still chose to donate to the Humane Society of the United States. After all, it is about the animals and bettering their lives. The HSUS main goal is to end animal cruelty, and that’s what they’re fighting to do. As long as we have the same goal, we should join together and help save these poor, innocent lives!
